The momentum and adrenaline of the first month of lockdown/shelter in place/work from home has faded and the ambition to consume incessantly has waned. Still some standout books, articles and TV from which I’ve taken some lessons:

  1. Hillbilly Elegy, J.D Vance. An anthropological deep dive that takes you in the heart of Appalachia. It’s a study of an America that I didn’t recognize coming from cities on the coasts. Juxtaposing this book to the news coverage of states and counties opening back up is a powerful reminder that expressions of personal freedom — like going to a crowded bar or getting your hair done— are longstanding and unlike to be shaken, even in during a pandemic.
  2. Heidi Hackemer’s Strategy Supper Clubs are a an enormously productive break from day-to-day client work. Hacking the 4'C was an hour well spent.
  3. Andrew Cuomo’s PowerPoints are endearingly primitive, so this designer redid them, Fast Company. A major improvement — but there’s something comforting and classic about the originals.
Governor Cuomo telling it like it is.
